Owen Coyne races safely back to first base. (Sheldon Jacobsohn - File)

A Friday walk-off against Saugus

April 23, 2025 by Joey Barrett

It was close from the first pitch, but in the end, Marblehead’s baseball team just barely escaped Northeastern Conference foe Saugus, 2-1, at Seaside Park Friday.

After escaping three bases-loaded jams, the Magicians scored in the fifth inning after an infield hit from Aidan Downey. However, a Tyler Riley RBI knotted the game, 1-1, for Saugus in the seventh.

Marblehead returned the favor with a lead-off walk from Colt Wales, sac bunt from Owen Coyne, and then a single from Downey to walk it off in the bottom of the seventh.

A common occurrence for the Magicians this season: pitchers’ duel. It happened again Friday between Marblehead’s Carter Sahagian (5 IP, 5 H, ER, 3 BB, 6 K) and Saugus’ Brayden Crawford (6 IP, 5 H, ER, 4 BB, 6 K).

Crawford added two hits at the plate, joined in the hit column by Cam Soroko (2-for-4), Danny Zeitz, Jordan Rodriguez, Cam Bernard, and Chris Mazin.

Marblehead hosts Danvers Wednesday at 4 p.m. with results too late to print.
