Abbot Public Library marches into May

April 30, 2025 by Amanda Lurey

Kimberly Grad, Abbot Public Library director, announced that there will be plenty to look forward to at the library this May with 18 adult programs, three teen programs, 15 children’s programs and one Friends of Abbot Public Library event.

The adult programs range from participating in art exhibits to “crafternoons” to book clubs and board game meet-ups, and there will be plenty of lectures and discussions to attend.

The first discussion the library will be hosting in May is the What the Presidents Read event where an “engaging discussion” will be held regarding “the early lives of various U.S. Presidents through the lens of their favorite childhood books” May 10 from 2-4 p.m. Registration is required and limited to 50 attendants. Register at tinyurl.com/President-Reads.

May’s first teen program is May 8 from 3-4:30 p.m. With help from the Pop-Up Art School, teens 13 and up can learn how to sculpt a sloth using a special needle and wool roving. Registration is required and can be done at tinyurl.com/Felted-Sloths.

The next program is Teen Game Time May 16 from 3-4:30 p.m. This is meant for kids in 6th grade and up. And the final teen program in May is May 22 from 3-4:30 p.m. for kids aged 13 and up to make suncatchers with North Shore Class School. Event space is limited and registration is required. Register at tinyurl.com/suncatchers-NSGS.

The children programs for May vary from doing crafts to learning how to create books and magazines to playtimes. Some of the children’s programs are geared toward older kids, like the workshops on May 6 and 27 from 3:45-5:30 p.m., which is intended for kids aged 5-8.

This event is called “The Habitats of Salem Sound: A Workshop with Carly McIver,” and kids will get to learn about ocean life and what makes a good habitat. There will also be a touch tank with shellfish, so part of the event will not be appropriate for people with shellfish allergies. Spacing is limited to 12 students, and registration is required. Register at abbotlibrary.org/events.

May’s sole Friends of Abbot Public Library event is the Mini Book Sale at the Marblehead Council on Aging at 10 Humphrey Street May 6 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Email friendsofabbotlibrary@gmail.com with any questions or visit tinyurl.com/Friends-of-Abbot.
