Business of the Week: Mookie’s at Mugford

December 4, 2024 by Grace Calandrella

A long-time dream for Laetitia Ferguson came to life when she opened the doors to a cozy coffee shop people know as Mookie’s at Mugford.

The dream came true five years ago in 2019 when a friend of Ferguson’s mentioned to her that the location Mookie’s now stands at today was up for sale.

“If not now, then when?” Ferguson said.

Ferguson was a teacher for 13 years prior to becoming the owner of the coffee shop. She spent many years in California as well before making the big move from the West Coast to the East Coast.

After her big move and obtaining the perfect location for the shop, the ideas started flowing right off the bat – what the cafe would look like and what would be on its menu.

In the heart of the summer of 2019, Mookie’s welcomed the community to enjoy a cup of coffee and a warm pastry. Since then, the community has been nothing but supportive.

Mookie’s has come a long way since first opening. In particular, the food menu has seen some changes. It was very extensive in the beginning with numerous breakfast and lunch options. After some time, Ferguson crafted the menu seen today – simple, yet delicious.

Currently, Mookie’s serves pastries that come from A&J King out of Salem, ensuring their guests get the utmost freshness everyday. Ferguson emphasized the importance of having the best quality goods they can get.

After three years of only a coffee shop, Ferguson bought Haley’s Wine and Spirits directly next door creating a one-stop shop for a great cup of coffee and a bottle of liquor.

“It’s nice because people come out of town, they’ll have breakfast, they’ll do their lattes, and then they’ll pop in there and check it out,” Ferguson said.

The community of Marblehead is a big reason Mookie’s still stands today. Opening only six months prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the locals around Marblehead continued to support the shop.

“They were so loyal. Everyone around here has been so wonderful. I just could not be here without them,” Ferguson said.

Whether it’s for a morning coffee and warm pastry or a smooth bottle of liquor, Mookie’s at Mugford is the location to be.
