Business of The Week: Plus Cafe

November 6, 2024 by Grace Calandrella

On the corner of Atlantic Avenue and Barnard Street in Marblehead sits a locally owned, small business coffee shop called Plus Cafe.

The European style cafe has proudly been serving the community for three years since they opened in January of 2021. They offer various coffees, bakery items, and numerous breakfast and lunch items including sandwiches, salads, paninis, and more.

The cafe’s atmosphere is relaxed yet energetic at the same time. The high ceilings and subtle music playing throughout the shop offers the relaxed ambience. Though the people occupying tables and catching up with one another created the positive and high energy aspect. Both characteristics that want to be felt in a local coffee shop.

Owner David Qyarsi has owned multiple businesses over the course of two decades, his experience is highly noted within his shops. Qyarsi currently owns another similar style cafe in Charlestown called “Mister Q Cafe” which helped inspire him to open Plus Cafe. “I drove by one day, I saw the location and thought why not do something similar to Charlestown,” Qyarsi said.

Prior to either shop existing though, Qyarsi said “the idea came after visiting a coffee shop in Iceland.” The style of coffee shops in Iceland are similar to those of small business coffee shops, as opposed to chain shops. He wanted to channel that style and bring it here, to Massachusetts.

Common for many small businesses it can be difficult to get customers when first opening, for Plus Cafe it was no challenge. “It was very positive,” in reference to the response from the community. “Everybody loved it. It was something different for the community.”

The social media pages show exactly that, the positive community turnout. Many posts across the platforms showing customers sitting at the cafe with smiles from ear to ear. Plus cafe has been able to maintain their customers with “fresh flavors, homemade charm, and a perfect cup of coffee,” as stated in their mission statement.

Add some energy to your day by stopping at the Plus Cafe located at 34 Atlantic Avenue in Marblehead. They are active on facebook, instagram, and twitter where you can see their latest food and drink additions.
