Cross country team shines bright at Twilight

The Marblehead girls competed in the Bob Glennon Twilight Meet’s Medium School Varsity 5K Friday, finishing 12th overall. Marrietta O’Connell finished third in a blazing-fast 17:48 (40-second personal record).

Caterina Piper (20:00.2, personal record) finished 33rd, while Maren Potter rounded out Marblehead’s top three in her first full 5K (21:57.5).

Earlier in the week, the Marblehead boys cross country team (6-0) traveled to Bradley Palmer State Park to take on Masconomet and Danvers. The boys defeated Masconomet, 19-37, and Danvers, 25-30.

The team was led by a wire-to-wire 15:47 win by Isaac Gross.

“It was an impressive performance by Isaac as he has been recovering from an illness,” Marblehead coach Brian Heenan said.

Nate Assa continued to impress with a second-place finish of 16:0; Will Cerrutti finished fourth in 16:08.

As for the girls, they lost to Masconomet and won against Danvers to move to 5-1 on the season. Marrietta O’Connell and Cat Piper took first and second overall, respectively.

St. Mary’s 31.5

Despite winning shooters Kyle Rush (5.5 holes) and Josh Doney (5.5), as well as Shea Newhall (4.5) and Micah Hashikawa (4.5) all giving strong performances, St. Mary’s (12-5) was bested by Marblehead (13-1) Tuesday.

Marty Ryan (6.5 holes), Jacob Hershfield (6), Matt Mahan (6), and Joy Meshulam (6) led the way for the Magicians.

Both teams return to action Wednesday as St. Mary’s hosts Archbishop Williams, and Marblehead welcomes Winthrop.

Marty Ryan (34) was named medalist, while Charlie Grenier, Jacob Hershfield, James Bickell, Matt Mahan, Adrian Baron, and Toby Grenier followed with victories in a strong performance from Marblehead (12-1).

Simon Quicken shot a 37 and tied his match.

Salem 17

At Olde Salem Greens on Wednesday, Oct. 11, all eight Magicians (11-1) won their matches against Salem. Charlie Grenier was the medalist with a 36, followed by Marty Ryan (37), Toby Grenier (37), Jacob Hershfield (38), and Matt Mahan (38).

Despite Alyssa Gentile’s 12 digs and a strong outing from Sydney Faris, Marblehead (6-7) was defeated in set scores of 7-25, 11-25, and 12-25 Thursday, Oct. 12.
