Last Saturday, VFW commander Ronny Knight witnessed an unsightly scene.
Five bags of trash were dumped in the parking lot of the VFW Post 2005 on West Shore Drive.
“We treat this place like it’s sacred ground,” he said. “This is very upsetting.”
He said multiple members of Post-2005 have expressed how angry it made them to see bags of trash dumped on their property.
“It is just plain disrespectful,” he said.
“As Commander and with my Fellow Brothers and Sisters, we are trying to keep our Post growing with events and letting the public know all are welcome, but to have anyone do this to our property sends a very clear signal of one, a lack of respect, and two, a lack of integrity,” Knight said.
Knight said he does not know who dumped the trash, but he is asking for it to never happen again.
“We feel betrayed and hurt by the actions taken because you couldn’t make it to the town transfer station you decided to disrespect our if I may be so bold “ Holy Grounds” for your own convenience,” he added.
He said that this had never happened before, but that it most likely is due to the Republic Services trash strike that is reaching into its third week.
“They have to look themselves in the mirror and ask what their values are and what respect they show Veterans in our view not very much much,” Knight said.
