July 8 special election polling hours confirmed

June 4, 2025 by Amanda Lurey

There will be a special election July 8 for Marblehead voters to decide if they would like to uphold the passing of Town Meeting Article 23, which allows for MBTA 3A zoning.

On the July 8 ballot, a YES vote means the voter is in favor of upholding the decision made at Town Meeting, which was to allow for MBTA 3A zoning in the following three districts: Pleasant Street, Broughton Road and Tioga Way. A NO vote means the voter would like to overturn the decision made at Town Meeting, ultimately voting against MBTA 3A zoning.

Polling hours for the special election will be from 2-8 p.m., which is in line with the Town’s 1954 referendum that is being used for the first time.

The referendum states, “The polls shall be opened at two o’clock in the afternoon and shall be closed not earlier than eight o’clock in the evening.” While there was a push for polling hours to extend until 10 p.m., Select Board Chair Erin Noonan explained that Massachusetts state law does not allow for polling places to close any later than 8 p.m.
