Manhattan Sandwich Co. brings New York to Marblehead

May 21, 2025 by Amanda Lurey

Ipswich resident Mike Goodman’s Manhattan Sandwich Co. at 1 Bessom Street has been feeding Marbleheaders for about 18 years now over by Village Plaza.

Goodman said he has “always been in the food industry,” mentioning that when he was younger he worked at Burger King and McDonald’s. He also had experience working in the kitchen of a nursing home, “so I’ve always been around food.”

Goodman said he feels that Manhattan Sandwich Co. provides Marbleheaders with “different types of sandwiches from the competition,” and added that “it’s not your average sub shop. It’s kind of a higher end sandwich shop.”

“People love food. They love to eat food,” Goodman said, “and the reason why we call it Manhattan Sandwich Company is because, when you think of big deli sandwiches, of course (you think about) New York, so I wanted to tie that together.”

“This is something I’ve always wanted to do, and I wanted to be different (from) Subway and all these other places,” Goodman added.

Manhattan Sandwich Co.’s most popular sandwich is the Mickey’s #7, which comes with lightly toasted bread, turkey breast, coleslaw, melted Swiss cheese and Russian dressing, but in the summertime, the most popular sandwich is “of course” the special lobster roll. Goodman said the lobster roll is no different than what people pay $26-28 for, but he charges $18.99.

His personal favorite sandwich at Manhattan Sandwich Co. is the Liberty Melt, which comes with homemade tuna on toasted bread with lettuce, tomato, pickles, onion and hots, melted Swiss cheese and Russian dressing.

Goodman emphasized that all his meat is sourced locally, and he uses ingredients “that flow” in each of the sandwiches. “Everything that works together, I try to get the highest quality for the best price to make everything affordable – and you get a good sized sandwich for the price,” he said.

Manhattan Sandwich Co. is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m.-7 p.m.
