A ghost is spotted on Gerry Street. (Sophia Harris)

Who needs Salem anyway?

October 22, 2025 by Sophia Harris

While Salem might be known as the best-of-the-best when it comes to Halloween, Marblehead does have an amazing lineup with a full lineup of creative, family-friendly, and festive events running from Oct. 23-31, without all of the crowds, of course.

From pumpkin contests and concerts to costume parties and historical presentations, there’s something for everyone to enjoy this spooky season.

Thursday, Oct. 23: Paint Night

Get into the Halloween spirit with Paint Night at Lighthouse Fitness Studio from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Local artist Angela Dixey will lead participants through an acrylic painting project. Light appetizers will be served, and guests are welcome to BYOB for a relaxed evening of creativity.

Friday, Oct. 24: Halloween Fun for All Ages

The day kicks off with Marblehead Parenting’s Not-so-Scary Halloween Party from 3:30-6 p.m. Families are invited to come in costume for crafts, snacks, and Halloween fun in a friendly, festive environment.

Later that evening, adults can enjoy live music at The Beacon featuring Funbucket, beginning at 9 p.m.

Sunday, Oct. 26: Celebrating History

Marblehead’s Old North Church will commemorate its 200th anniversary at 2 p.m. with a special presentation by church member Ginny von Rueden titled “Major Events, Mysteries, and Memorable People.” The event includes a slideshow highlighting two centuries of the church’s history, followed by a reception in the Parish Hall at 35 Washington St.

Monday, Oct. 2:, Spooky Stories

On Monday from 7-8 p.m., Abbot Public Library and Ashland Public Library will co-host a virtual Q&A with acclaimed mystery and romance author Sherry Thomas, discussing her new book “The Librarians.” Registration is required for this online event.

Thursday, Oct. 30: Pumpkin Parties!

The 17th Annual Pumpkin Illumination, from 4-6:30 p.m. is presented in partnership with the Marblehead Family Fund, returns to the Lee Mansion Garden. Participants are invited to carve and decorate pumpkins for prizes in several categories, including Spookiest, Most Creative, and Most Marblehead. The public can vote for the People’s Choice Award.

Admission is $5 per person or $20 per family, with free pumpkin registration available at the door.

Also on Thursday from 4-6 p.m., families can enjoy Trick or Treat in the Business Districts, where local retailers will offer candy, treats, and extended shopping hours. Participating businesses will display a Halloween Pumpkin Poster to indicate their involvement.

Friday, Oct. 31: Halloween Day Highlights

Halloween Day brings a full slate of activities for children and adults alike:

  • Children’s Halloween Party at 10:30 a.m.
Children ages 1–5 and their caregivers are invited to the library’s Halloween party, featuring story time, simple crafts and games, refreshments, and goodie bags. Costumes are encouraged, and online registration is required.
  • Beatles Tribute Concert at 5:30 p.m.
The Lee Mansion Garden will host a free, family-friendly performance by Studio Two, a Beatles tribute band recreating the excitement of the early 1960s Fab Four era.
  • Marblehead vs. Danvers Football Game — 7 p.m.
Cheer on the Marblehead Magicians as they face off against Danvers in an exciting Halloween night matchup.
  • All Hallows Eve Ball after 8 p.m.
The celebration continues into the night with The Johnny Ray Band performing at the All Hallows Eve Ball. Guests can dance, compete in the costume contest, and enjoy an evening of live music and Halloween fun. There is no cover charge and free parking is available.

From creative art nights to family parties, historical talks, and live entertainment, Marblehead’s Halloween week offers something for residents of all ages. Organizers encourage attendees to dress up, bring friends and family, and join in celebrating the season in true community spirit.
