It is with deep sadness that the Marblehead Police share the passing of retired Patrol Officer Roy Ballard after a courageous battle with cancer.
Roy R. Ballard, of Lynn, passed away peacefully on Jan. 25, at home surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Linda (Carron) Ballard, with whom he shared 35 years of marriage.
Ballard dedicated much of his life to the town of Marblehead, serving as a patrol officer for more than 25 years. Joining the Marblehead Police Department in the mid-1980s, he became a well-known and respected figure in the community.
He spent much of his career working the midnight to 8 a.m. shift, ensuring the safety of the town while most were asleep. No matter the time of day or weather conditions—storms, holidays, or town emergencies—Ballard was always willing to step up and serve.
Beyond his daily duties, Ballard played a crucial role in advocating for his fellow officers as the longtime President of the Marblehead Police Union. He worked with town administrators and legal teams to negotiate fair contracts with professionalism, humor, and dedication to his colleagues.
Ballard’s impact on Marblehead extended beyond his police work. He was a fixture at town events, often working details at the annual town meeting or patrolling community gatherings.
He was also an avid sports official, serving as a respected umpire and referee for high school and college softball and basketball games throughout the region. He took great pride in mentoring young officials and was honored to officiate at the 2009 ASA Championship in Oklahoma City.
Despite his demanding career, Ballard’s greatest commitment was to his family. He worked tirelessly to provide for them, never missing his daughters’ games or events—even if it meant showing up in uniform. His presence in town, whether on duty or supporting his family, left an indelible mark on the community he loved.
