Personal records here, there, and everywhere

Talk about personal bests. Marblehead’s track and field program was well-represented last week as the boys’ and girls’ teams competed in the Northeastern Conference Spring Invite. In point scoring, both Marblehead teams took down Saugus.

Clark Roszell led the Magicians in high jump, clearing 5-8 for a personal-best leap. Noah Smerka was close behind with a 5-4 clearance, which tied his personal best from the winter season.

Elise Burchfield won the long jump (16-4.5).

“Elise is the runner-up state champion in the indoor long jump, and she will continue to put up impressive jumps throughout the spring season – especially with a favorable backwind,” said Marblehead Coach Nolan Raimo.

Over to shot put, Lillian Reddy finished second in the conference with a season-best throw of 29-5.5.

As for discus, Hannah O’Brien finished second with a throw of 86-0, nearing her personal best in the 90s. On the boys’ side, Logan McRae-Hughes set a “massive personal best,” as said by Raimo, with a hurl of 115-7.

Julia Betz’s breakout year in the javelin continued with a new best of 58-2 to finish 13th. Graham Firestone (138-2) and Phineas Jakiouis (132-3) “solidified themselves as top javelin throwers in the conference,” according to Raimo, with new personal bests.

Juliet Burchfield ran her best time of the season (81.16) to place eighth in the 400mh. Burchfield, Ava Machado, Charlie Roszell, and Lucy Flynn won the 4x100m relay with a time of 51.35.

Sarah Munroe qualified for the Division 3 state championship – in the first 2-mile of her career – and finished third in 12:21.51.

Ruby Assa led the way for Marblehead with a new personal-best time of 6:05.12 to finish fourth in the mile. In the 800m, Henrik Adams ran a season best of 2:05.54 to finish second “in an epic finish” against Peabody, according to Raimo.

Flynn – just a sophomore – finished third in the 200m with a new best of 27.17, which penned her down as eighth all-time on Marblehead’s 200m rankings.

Machado, in the 100m, finished third in 13.24, while Arianna Leahy set a season-best time of 20.13 to finish 10th in the 100/110m hurdles.
