ROUNDUP: Baseball team punches tournament ticket

Marblehead’s baseball team, serving as the home team but playing at Austin Prep due to field conditions last Friday, served up a 2-0 win against Bishop Fenwick. The victory punched the Magicians’ (10-10) ticket to the Division 2 state tournament.

Stefan Shepard scored Aidan Downey in the first inning, while Will Quigley knocked in Shepard in the sixth. Carter Sahagian went the distance for Marblehead and stole the show, allowing just two hits and two walks to go with nine strikeouts.

SOFTBALL

Marblehead 7
Wakefield 2

Kate Andriano (2-for-4, 2B, 3 RBI), Luka Bornhorst (3-for-4, RBI, 3 R), and Tessa Francis (3-for-4, 3 RBI) made up a three-headed monster in Marblehead’s road win. Francis allowed just two runs (both unearned) and three hits to go with 12 strikeouts in the circle.

Medford 3

Medford met its match at home and was tripled up by Marblehead (15-2). Francis of the Magicians gave up five hits and two earned runs to go with 15 strikeouts. She helped her cause in the third inning with a three-run homer.

Bornhorst batted 2-for-4 and Lyla McGovern batted 1-for-3 with a three-run double. Ashley and Isabel Mortensen, as well as Nora Mayhan and Andriano collected hits.

BOYS LACROSSE

St. John’s Prep 16
Hingham 4

The Eagles (17-1) concluded the regular season in style with a double-digit win at Glatz Field in Danvers. Luke Kelly (4 goals, assist) and Cam McCarthy (3 goals, assist) led the offense, while Sam Wilmot and Ryan DeLucia shined defensively. Mattheus Du Plessis made five saves, while Will Crawford won 17 of 19 face-offs.

St. John’s Prep 8
Boston College High 4

St. John’s Prep (16-1) looked as if it was postseason ready, doubling up BC High to win its sixth consecutive Catholic Conference title. K​​evin Correa, Ryan DeLucia, Wilmot and goalie Du Plessis (9 S) led a dominant defensive effort, while Josh Barton (2 G, A), Ryan McCarthy (2 G), Madden McGowan (G, A), and Beckett Lee (G, A) guided the offense.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Marblehead 15
Saugus 1

Marblehead (12-6) wrapped up its regular season with a decisive road victory in Saugus. Kathryn Commoss led the way with five goals. Maddie Forbes added three goals and two assists. Caitlyn Ryan tallied two goals and two assists, while Gretchen Smith, Ramona Gillett, Emma Ryan, and Avery Barbeau each contributed one goal. Molly Bullard made 10 saves in goal for the Magicians.

Winthrop 3

Marblehead hit the road to Winthrop and returned home victorious after a 14-3 halftime cushion. Ryan scored a hat trick, while Commoss (2 goals, 3 assists) and Zoe Dwyer (2 goals, 3 assists) secured five-point evenings.

Following offensively were Smith (assist), Ryan (2 goals), Gillett (goal), Forbes (2 goals, 2 assists), Sammy Walker (goal), Barbeau (goal, assist), Anna Rausch (goal), and Ella McConnell (goal, 2 assists). Bullard wasn’t bombarded with shots, but secured four saves when needed.

GIRLS TENNIS

The Magicians took down Salem (5-0 final) and Peabody (4-1 final) in a Northeastern Conference doubleheader. Against the Witches, Abbie Goodwin, Callie Gilmore, and Lilah Siegel won singles matches, followed by the duos of Caroline Bruett/Josie Reers and Eliana Berger/Zoi Guzzini in doubles action. Against the Tanners, Sami Dosch and Nina Johnson secured singles wins. Doubles matches were won by Lani Gilmore/Reese Friedman and Joy Meshulam/Erin Wilder.

“We had to play a doubleheader due to all the rainouts, so due to the depth of our team, we could field two teams today and get nine points out of 10, which is great,” said Marblehead Coach Tracy Ackerman.
