ROUNDUP: Dominant doubleheader on the courts

May 21, 2025 by Joey Barrett

Marblehead’s girls tennis team took down Salem (5-0 final) and Peabody (4-1 final) in Tuesday’s Northeastern Conference doubleheader.

Against the Witches, Abbie Goodwin, Callie Gilmore, and Lilah Siegel won singles matches, followed by the duos of Caroline Bruett/Josie Reers and Eliana Berger/Zoi Guzzini in doubles action. Against the Tanners, Sami Dosch and Nina Johnson secured singles wins. Doubles matches were won by Lani Gilmore/Reese Friedman and Joy Meshulam/Erin Wilder.

“We had to play a doubleheader due to all the rainouts, so due to the depth of our team, we could field two teams today and get nine points out of 10, which is great,” said Marblehead Coach Tracy Ackerman.

Despite mixing up their lineup, the Magicians still found a way to sweep the Vikings Monday.

Marblehead winners were Caroline Crosby (6-1, 6-2), Meshulam (6-0, 6-2), and Guzzini (6-1, 6-1) at singles. Callie Gilmore and Bruett won at first doubles (6-0, 6-0) and Berger and Wilder won at second doubles (6-1, 6-1).

“It was great to see all of our players contributing to our win today,” Ackerman said. “Caroline Crosby did an outstanding job playing first singles. The wind was a big factor, and she played super consistent tennis.”

Despite the duos of Lani Gilmore/Friedman and Reers/Bruett cruising in doubles action, Marblehead fell after losing all three singles matches.

“I was super proud of Callie (Gilmore) at third singles,” Ackerman said. “She just picked up the game of tennis, and has shown tremendous improvement and determination this season. We put her in a high-pressure situation and I couldn’t be more proud of her match today.”

Despite a first singles loss, Marblehead had more than enough in the tank to tame the Panthers. Johnson and Goodwin took care of singles, while the duos of Lani Gilmore/Friedman and Reers/Callie Gilmore got the job done in the doubles department.

BOYS TENNIS

Gloucester 0

On what was described as the “windiest day of the season” by Marblehead Coach Elisabeth Foukal, her Magicians earned a big Northeastern Conference sweep of Gloucester.

At third singles, Austin Bacon didn’t lose a game, winning comfortably 6-0, 6-0. Etan Farfel, at first singles, won his matchup 6-0, 6-3, while teammate Matthew Sherf won at second singles 6-0, 6-1.

At first doubles, senior Anthony Vizy and sophomore Ty Cooper won 6-1, 6-0. In second doubles, Leo Winocour and TJ Kelly got the job done against Sam Young and Henry Harrison 6-1, 6-0.

Marblehead cruised to another win behind singles victories from Kelly, Bacon, and Winocour. Add doubles wins from Sherf/Alex Boehning and Quinn Fletcher/Graydon Waller, and that was all she wrote.

Kelly, Quinn Sullivan, and Fletcher went 1-2-3 in singles to spook away the Witches. Add doubles wins from Nico Altonian/Boehning and Waller/Filip Wabno, and it was a done deal.

“The match of the day was Quinn Fletcher’s solid performance in third singles against a talented player in Eden McClain,” Foukal said.

The Magicians (9-10 by press time) moved to within one win from a postseason berth. Senior captain Ian McComish pitched a one-hitter through six innings. McComish recorded an RBI with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning to extend Marblehead’s lead to four runs. Sophomore pitcher Owen Coyne entered in the seventh to close the game.

It was no home field, no problem for Marblehead, which blanked Masconomet after the game was tied heading into the seventh inning. Big hits down the stretch came Coyne, Aidan Downey, and Colt Wales.

“It all started early with a great defensive catch by Owen Coyne in right field that really set the tone,” said Marblehead Coach Mike Giardi, who received a stellar pitching performance from Carter Sahagian (7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 10 K).

Despite hits from Marblehead’s Greyson Leventhal, Downey, Wales, and Will DePhillips, the Magicians had no answer for Beverly’s offense, which was led by Callan McCay (2 H).

Behind two-goal performances from Commoss, Ryan, Gillett, and Forbes, Marblehead worked its magic against the Chieftains. Bullard made 11 saves.

“As shown by the distribution of goals, we had an all-around team win today as we celebrated our seniors,” said Marblehead Coach Annie Madden. “We made sure to take advantage of each of our offensive sets and had six different contributors making an impact. The defense had a standout game, with Molly Bullard coming up with an impressive 11 saves at critical points in the game.”
