With seven teams (Beverly, Gloucester, Marblehead, Peabody, Salem, Swampscott, Winthrop) giving it their all at Gloucester High Tuesday evening, the Peabody boys were crowned Northeastern Conference champions, while the girls’ title saw Peabody and Marblehead share the crown.

Peabody jumped ahead, 6-0, after two innings and it was smooth sailing from there at Seaside Park. On the other side, Marblehead dropped its third consecutive game. The Tanners were led by Mike Murphy (3-for-4, 2 RBI), Ty Lomasney (3-for-4, R, RBI), and Jariel Tolentino (2-for-4, 2 R, RBI), while pitcher Max Silvia (6 IP, 4 H, 7 K, 5 BB, 0 ER) put on a show.

BOYS TENNIS

Marblehead 5
Winthrop 0

Marblehead (12-1, 10-0 Northeastern Conference) capitalized on its home-court advantage en route to a sweep of Winthrop. TJ Kelly, Austin Bacon, and Alex Boehning went 1-2-3 in singles, while Leo Winocour/Adam Loughlin and Quinn Fletcher/Filip Wabno were successful in doubles.

St. John’s Prep 5
Andover 0

It was no home court, no problem for St. John’s Prep. Rudr Malayya, Jack Prokopis, and Luke Free served up singles wins, while the doubles teams of Luke Prokopis/Boris Kouzminov and James de Buy Wenniger/Wade Evitts also won.

Marblehead 4
Hamilton-Wenham 1

The Magicians overcame a second singles loss to take down Hamilton-Wenham. Etan Farfel and Bacon secured singles wins, while the duos of Jayden Janock/Ty Cooper and Kelly/Boehning took care of doubles business.

GIRLS TENNIS

Marblehead 5
Gloucester 0

The Magicians were unstoppable against Gloucester. Sami Dosch got Marblehead off to a fast start with a 6-0, 6-1 win at first singles. At second singles, Nina Johnson fell behind, dropping the first set 0-6. Johnson won the second set 6-0 before winning the match in a 10-point tiebreaker, 10-1.

Abbie Goodwin won comfortably at third singles 6-0, 6-0. Lani Gilmore and Reese Friedman, at first doubles, won 6-1, 6-1, while second doubles Joy Meshulam and Lilah Siegel made their varsity debuts and won 6-0, 6-0.

Marblehead 3
Hamilton-Wenham 2

Marblehead dropped first and second singles matches, but had just enough to squeak by Hamilton-Wenham. Goodwin got the Red and Black on the board, and from there, the doubles teams of Gilmore/Friedman and Josie Reers/Caroline Bruett prevailed.

“This was a great high school tennis matchup between two very solid teams,” said Marblehead Coach Tracy Ackerman. “HW has been dominating the Cape Ann League the past few years, so a victory today really is meaningful for us. We are peaking at the exact right time in our season.”
