ROUNDUP: Pair of wins for boys tennis

April 23, 2025 by Joey Barrett

Despite a first singles loss, Marblehead (4-1) had more than enough in the tank to take down Malden Catholic, 4-1, on home court. Ty Cooper and Alex Boehning won singles matches. The doubles teams of Leo Winocour/Adam Loughlin and Nico Altonian/Filip Wabno were also victorious.

“I’m really proud of how our boys competed throughout the lineup,” said Marblehead Coach Elisabeth Foukal. “Three of our players played their first top-seven match and came out with solid wins, which shows the depth of our lineup.”

Earlier in the week, Marblehead took down Winthrop – and the wind. TJ Kelly, Austin Bacon, and Adam Loughlin went 1-2-3 in singles, while the duos of Quinn Sullivan/Alex Boehning and Quinn Fletcher/Graydon Waller compiled doubles wins.

GIRLS TENNIS

Marblehead 4
Beverly 1

Marblehead served up a win against Beverly Friday evening. Samara Dosch and Abbie Goodwin won singles matches, while the duos of Lani Gilmore/Reese Friedman and Josie Reers/Callie Gilmore secured doubles victories.

“We had four of the five matches go three sets today, making this a great competitive contest,” said Marblehead Coach Tracy Ackerman. “Beverly is always a solid team, and today was no exception.”

Marblehead 5
Peabody 0

Marblehead delivered a sweep against Peabody. Dosch, Nina Johnson, and Goodwin recorded singles wins, while Gilmore/Friedman and Gilmore/Reers were victorious in doubles.

BOYS LACROSSE

Wakefield 11
Marblehead 9

Despite stellar performances from Will Sullivan (4 goals, assist), Reece Moore (3 goals), James Achterhof (goal, assist), Tyler Forbes (goal), Sean Dolan (assist), and Colin Maniaci (11 saves), the visiting Magicians fell short by a pair of goals Monday.

St. John’s Prep 11
Falmouth (Maine) 6

Two defending state champions. One game.

The Prep (8-0) remained perfect with a five-goal win against host Falmouth after trailing by two goals early. The Eagles tucked six unanswered goals and took a 7-4 halftime lead.

Beckett Lee (3 goals, assist), Luke Kelly (3 goals), and Ryan McCarthy (2 goals) led the offense, while Jack Weissenburger (4 ground balls, 3 caused turnovers) shined defensively.

St. John’s Prep 10
Xaverian 6

Madden McGowan (3 goals), Jackson Quigley (2), Lee (2), and Joe Bullard (2) all scored multiple goals as the Eagles flew over Xaverian. Goalie Austin Kitces saved eight shots, while Will Crawford won 15-of-19 face-offs.

Marblehead 12
Peabody 3

Marblehead took down its NEC foe behind Sullivan’s six goals. Moore (3 goals, 2 assists), Colin White (2 goals), Forbes (goal, 2 assists), and Dolan (3 assists) contributed offensively alongside Maniaci’s 12 saves.

BASEBALL

St. John’s Prep 8
Haverhill 0

The Eagles sported 11 hits and powered past Haverhill Monday. Braeden Hurley, Jack DiFilippo, and Joseph Eberhart combined for 10 strikeouts to secure a shutout.

Beverly 1
Marblehead 0

In its first game at Seaside Park this spring, Marblehead (3-3) let one slip against the Panthers. The left-handed pitchers’ duel came down to the seventh and final inning, when a lead-off walk and three consecutive outfield flares led to Beverly’s run.

Marblehead’s Ian McComish went the distance, while Greyson Leventhal and Cameron Quigley compiled hits.

SOFTBALL

Marblehead 1
Beverly 0

Talk about a pitchers’ duel, as Beverly’s Lidia Miedema (7 K) and Marblehead’s Tessa Francis (9 K) each allowed two hits. In the end, however, Marblehead escaped in the final inning.

In the seventh, Francis helped her cause by hitting a single to left field before Keliane Salem stole second base. From there, Kate Andriano intentionally walked before Salem and Andriano pulled off a double steal. After a passed ball, Salem “came flying home” to win the game, according to Marblehead Coach Johnny Gold.
