ROUNDUP: Up-and-down week for the Headers

December 31, 2024 by Joey Barrett

Marblehead’s boys hockey team remained on fire – and undefeated – with a 7-1 thrashing of the Medford Mustangs on Thursday in a Gloucester holiday tournament. Marblehead received goals from six skaters to move its record to 5-0. Will Sullivan, Crew Monaco, Kyle Hart, Hayden Gallo (first varsity goal), Avin Rodovsky, and Kellen Laramie (first varsity goal) got the job done in the scoring department. On Friday, however, the Headers (5-1) couldn’t find the same success. They fell to Medfield, 3-1, in the championship game for loss No. 1. Rodovsky found the back of the net, while Leo Burdge made 25 saves.

The 10th Annual Pete Frates Winter Classic went to Pope Francis, which put up a four-piece against St. John’s Prep – a difficult task against the defending Division 1 state champion Eagles (2-2). Brandon Ward tied the game, 1-1, in the second period from Kevin Correa, but that was it for The Prep on the scoreboard. Pope Francis – which won the shots category, 34-28 – scored two power-play goals before polishing things off with an empty-netter.

Earlier in the week, Brandon Ward scored with less than 30 seconds to go as The Prep upped its record to 2-1. The assist came from Ryan DeLucia. Sam Croke scored the first goal of the game for St. John’s.

The Prep was on the wrong end of the scoreboard in Sunday’s round three of the Commonwealth Motors Christmas Classic. Despite the loss, Marcus Magloire (16 points), Michael Miller (13), and Brian Norton (11) played well offensively, and Gio Rodriguez was a tournament All-Star.

TRACK AND FIELD

Marblehead’s duo of Margaret Miller (1:50.67) and Norah Walsh (1:57.78) rounded the top three in the 600-meter race during Monday morning’s Northeastern Conference freshman/sophomore meet in Boston. The Marblehead girls finished second with 56 points. On the boys’ side, Swampscott claimed gold with 93 points, narrowly defeating Marblehead, which finished with 89 points.
