Strong outing from Marblehead-Swampscott grapplers

January 22, 2025 by Joey Barrett

ANDOVER — The Marblehead-Swampscott wrestling team made its way to Greater Lawrence Tech on Saturday with the Black and Blue going 2-1 against Greater Lawrence Tech, Billerica, and Lawrence.

Against the host Reggies – Marblehead-Swampscott’s first dual-meet against them in a long time, according to coach Michael Stamison – his team won, 42-36.

“These were an important 14 matches for seeding in the postseason,” Stamison said. “The kids stepped up.”

Wins via pinfall came from Jaymes Carey, Liam O’Brien, Gary Podstrelov, Greg Podstrelov, and Colin Hart. Mason Hinshaw chipped in with a 16-1 technical fall, Gavin Lepler won via a major 23-15 decision, and Alejandro Haven stepped up big time, defeating a ranked opponent via 9-7 decision.

Picking up exhibition wins were Eva Goodman, Nolan Glass, and Gavin Ferretti.

Next up were the Lancers of Lawrence, who took down the Black and Blue, 48-32.

“We wrestled well, but, ultimately, didn’t have the firepower to close the gap,” Stamison said.

The team’s last duel was against Billerica Memorial. Swampscott-Marblehead defeated the Indians, 52-28, behind pinfall wins from Carey, Devin DiBarri, Hart, and Jayvery Monegro filling in at heavyweight. Bumping up from 165 pounds to 175 was Haven with another “great win,” according to Stamison.

“While a bit shorthanded, they have some tough kids, including top-ranked 120-pounder Peter Rincan,” Stamison said of Billerica Memorial.

Another busy week lies ahead for the Black and Blue. They take on Northeastern Conference foe Beverly on Thursday before Saturday’s inaugural Tri-State Cup at Triton Regional.

“The winner takes home a beautiful cup, which we will compete for every year moving forward,” Stamison said. “It will be a quad-match format, with the winningest team taking home the cup.”
