Alyce Deveau, executive director of Seaglass Village, a nonprofit organization that helps seniors live independently, has announced her upcoming retirement from her position on Sept. 1, which she has held since the organization’s inception in 2021.
“I can’t imagine a more fulfilling role than working to help seniors live independently in their homes. I have loved getting to know every member and volunteer, either in person or on the phone,” Deveau said.
By providing volunteer services and social opportunities, the organization helps seniors live independently throughout Marblehead, Nahant and Swampscott — and is planning to expand its operations to Salem this year, according to the press release.
Deveau has enjoyed being a volunteer as well as the director, and plans to continue to volunteer. “Every volunteer activity that I participated in gave me probably more pleasure than it gave the member,” she said.
As a member of the Swampscott for All Ages Committee, Deveau jumped at the chance to become a founding member of Seaglass Village, according to Heidi Whear, vice president of Seaglass Village and director of Aging Services.
“We were in our infancy stage, meeting via Zoom in the early days of COVID,” Whear said. “Alyce has been a driving force since the very first, and we have been so blessed to benefit from her passion, deep knowledge of the town, and strong leadership.”
Though she’ll be stepping down from her position, Deveau remains hopeful about the organization’s growth, as well as its plans to expand into Salem.
“There are so many people that need our help, and it is very fulfilling to answer their needs,” she said.
Doreen Hodgkin, the immediate past president of the Seaglass Village Board of Directors, shared her thoughts on Deveau’s decision to retire.
“I was thrilled when Alyce accepted the role of executive director of Seaglass Village four years ago… She was the perfect anchor for us to launch this new adventure. I am happy for her that she has decided to take more time for herself and am glad to know that she will continue as a volunteer,” Hodgkin said.
The executive director position is part-time and is the only paid position of the organization. The office is located at the First Church Congregational in Swampscott, which has generously provided the space for the organization’s operations.
