BEVERLY — On Thursday, Sept. 19, 2024, the Resolution Center will celebrate its 30th anniversary with a special gala event featuring best-selling author and Newburyport resident Andre Dubus III as keynote speaker. The gala will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. at Danversport, 161 Elliott St., Danvers.
A milestone celebration
The event marks three decades of the Resolution Center’s positive impact providing conflict-resolution services and training to communities across Essex County. Formerly known as the North Shore Community Mediation Center, the organization has played a pivotal role in fostering effective communication and resolving conflicts in various settings, including schools, families, and workplaces.
Just like mediators practicing shuttle diplomacy on the international stage, local volunteers use their skills to help neighbors transform conflicts and bridge divides. With the help of mediators, young people involved with the Juvenile Court take responsibility to resolve issues themselves before facing a judge; tenants avoid homelessness by finding solutions that work for their landlords as well; and small-business owners reach agreements with customers and colleagues that prevent or repair costly misunderstandings.
Swampscott native and Beverly resident Hannah Bowen, executive director of the Resolution Center, expressed her pride and gratitude for the center’s impact, as well as her enthusiasm for the event.
“Celebrating 30 years is a remarkable achievement for our organization,” said Bowen. “We are excited to honor our past and look forward to continuing our mission of helping individuals and communities find common ground. Having Andre as our guest speaker adds a distinct local flavor and a thoughtful layer to this celebration. His work resonates deeply with the themes of understanding and connection that we strive to promote.”
Dubus, author of acclaimed works such as “House of Sand and Fog,” “The Garden of Last Days,” and his memoir “Townie,” will share his insights and experiences. His latest novel, “Such Kindness,” has further solidified his reputation as a powerful voice in contemporary literature.
“This celebration honors our valuable work in the community, especially our mediators who volunteer countless hours helping others to resolve disputes,” Resolution Center Board President and Marblehead native Bob Blayer said. “Conflict, unfortunately, is everywhere and the Resolution Center is doing its part to make a more peaceful world. Our programs and services are broad, responding to the needs of the community. We invite others to join with us and to support our efforts.”
