Winter Invitational sees lots of success

December 18, 2024 by Joey Barrett

Marblehead’s boys and girls track teams took part in an unscored Northeastern Conference Winter Invitational at New Balance Track in Boston. Marblehead coach Will Herlihy unofficially scored the meet, with the Magicians’ boys and girls placing first.

Alexander Humphreys led the way for Marblehead in the high jump, clearing 5-4 and finishing second, while Lillian Reddy put on a show in shot put. She placed second with a heave of 31-9.

“She added over three feet to her spin since her first time competing with it only two days earlier, and hit her best mark since the end of last indoor season when she was gliding,” said head coach Nolan Raimo.

Noah Jackson’s (3rd, 8.61) hurdle time was a new personal record.

Ava Machado ran away from the pack to win the 55m. She ran 7.45 in the preliminaries and 7.50 in the finals. On the boys’ side, Jacob Bobowski ran a personal record of 6.80 to finish second.

“Jacob is now tied for the fifth best time in our school’s history,” Raimo said. “This is a great start to the season for Jacob.”

In somewhat of a carbon copy from the cross country season, Nate Assa (4:38.16) and Will Cerrutti (4:41.73) took first and second, respectively, in the mile. Machado was a double-winner in the sprint events, taking both the 55m and 300m.

Maggie Miller (1:55.29) finished second in the 600m, while Jacob Szalewicz’s 1:24.60 put him second on Marblehead’s all-time list.

Marri O’Connell won the girls 1,000m with an outstanding time of 3:15.35.

“Even more impressive was her execution in the race. It was her first race at this distance and she was racing against an experienced mid-distance runner who excelled in the 1,000m last year,” Herlihy said. “Marri fearlessly controlled the race from the front and executed her kick at the perfect time to hold on against the charging Masco runner.”

Machado, Lucy Church, Lucy Flynn, and Zoe Dwyer battled it out to win the 4x200m relay (1:53.65). Sarah Munroe, Ruby Assa, Liv Carlson, and Gabby Hendy won the 4x400m relay with a time of 4:43.18.
