The Marblehead VFW Post 2005 will be hosting an Army-Navy Watch Party for the 125th Anniversary of the football game on Dec. 14. A bar opens at 1 p.m, a buffet will be offered at 2 p.m, and kickoff will be at 3 p.m.
“We’ve been looking forward to this event all year,” VFW Post Commander Ronny Knight said. “We, as a post, have really connected with the community this past year with our fundraising and entertainment platform of events, along with antique car shows and a few other community-based activities.”
With the variety of events the VFW Post held this year, Knight stated this created anticipation for the meeting of the Army and Navy, adding to the excitement of the event. Knight also encouraged all townspeople to attend this upcoming event.
“You don’t need to be a veteran to come and enjoy this game,” he said. “As we have been saying, if you can spell Army or Navy, if you have ever heard of the Army or Navy, you are welcome and need to be here.”
Veteran Tim Donahue expressed excitement for the event and is looking forward to the camaraderie among all those who attend.
“As sergeant-at-arms for the Post, I will be keeping order while enjoying a great game with great Chinese food,” Donahue said. “No question it’s a great event for the entire town to take part in.”
Former Post Commander and Army Veteran Doug Knowles said the event is a great way for the Post to connect with the community, as well as enjoying “some good ribbing of each other’s branches.
“No one ever played navy as a kid,” Knowles said.
Christine Marie, who will be working behind the bar for the game, believes the event will be successful for both the Post and the community.
“A lot of folks have been talking about coming to this and not only Veterans, but a good amount of work has also gone into this event, and it should be a great day for all,” Marie said.
Knight believes his thoughts on this game can be best summed up with a quote he heard one time.
“It’s the only game that everyone that is playing in it is willing to die for everyone who is watching it,” Knight said. “I can’t think of any place to better honor that commitment than to come to VFW Post 2005 to take part in this event.”
All are invited and encouraged to attend the Army-Navy football game watch party on Dec. 14 at the Marblehead VFW Post 2005.
