“The Lure of Marblehead” continues to age well more than 50 years later, as the book’s proclamation of Marblehead’s beauty rings true in the form of a recent recognition.
With my colleague Ryan Vermette’s report of NewEngland.com naming Marblehead as the top coastal town in New England, now may be a better time than ever to get a copy of Virginia Gamage and Priscilla Lord’s guidebook.
“The book, in fact, will probably revitalize the trend toward on-foot touring. Marblehead was never meant to be driven through,” an article from The Daily Evening Item reads. “The charisma of old Marblehead will come alive when, with book in hand, (the handy 6-by-9 inches,) the visitor zeroes in on any one of the eight sections.”
Of course, modern Marbleheaders could use the internet or their GPS to assist them in their sightseeing. But in a town that heavily celebrates its tradition, some might find themselves lured by “The Lure of Marblehead” today.
“This book should provide a delight to natives and newcomers, to yachting enthusiasts and historians, to old timers and teenagers,” the article reads. “The magical fascination that is Marblehead knows no age limit.”
