Carolyn Steadman, who has lived nearly all her life in Marblehead, celebrated her century birthday recently with family and friends. Born at the Mary Alley Hospital on June 23, 1924, the former Carolyn Bartlett married Jim Steadman after World War II.
The couple was happily married for more than 50 years and raised four sons. She has five grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Carolyn and Jim enjoyed a full and active life together. Carolyn was trained as a registered nurse at Salem Hospital and worked many years at the Lafayette Nursing Home in Marblehead. After about five years of marriage, Jim and Carolyn’s brother, Herbert Bartlett, formed a construction company, later subdivided, but still well known as the Bartlett and Steadman plumbing company.
Both were active members of the First Baptist Church, now Grace Community Church, Marblehead, and were busy with boating, skiing, and golf. They traveled within the U.S. and went skiing in Switzerland. They also traveled widely to attend reunions of Jim’s Army Airborne Division. Jim died in 1998.
Carolyn has enjoyed many hobbies, including painting, photography, and knitting and likes visiting with people. She moved to the Bertram House in Swampscott approximately 10 years ago.
