Marblehead Dollars for Scholars held its annual awards ceremony on July 13 at the Marblehead High School auditorium. The local nonprofit organization awarded 14 high-school seniors with scholarships totaling $52,000. Over the summer, the Board of Directors will award an additional $141,000 to rising college sophomores, juniors, and seniors, who must reapply for their scholarships each year.
A new endowed scholarship established in memory of Debbie Centracchio was presented at the ceremony for the first time. Centracchio was a well-loved member of the Marblehead community who worked as a preschool teacher and for 20 years at National Grand Bank. Members of the Centracchio family presented the scholarship to Sophia Wallen, who will attend the University of Rhode Island.
