Patti and Harvey Cohen beam on the Dolphin Yacht Club's newest launch named after them. (Ian McCommish)

Launching into the future at the Dolphin Yacht Club

July 24, 2024 by Sophia Harris

The Dolphin Yacht Club celebrated spouses Harvey and Patti Cohen, who helped bring the club out of bankruptcy in the 1990s, with a launch dedication in their name.

Alyssa Prince, the commodore of the club, said the Cohens have been instrumental in the ongoing success of the club.

“Harvey and Patti had done so much for this club when it was facing financial troubles,” she said.

Patti Cohen said she would not have been able to save the club without the support of the town, as well as the club’s board members.

She said she was “humbled and honored” by the dedication of the club’s launch, which was named the H.P. Cohen.

“I never expected anything like this, never in a million years,” Patti Cohen said.

Harvey Cohen said he felt incredibly honored by the day’s events.

Patti Cohen explained how over the years, they updated the club’s kitchen, obtained a liquor license, sold $10 memberships to increase revenue, hosted parties, and sold memberships for kayaking.

“Parties always bring people, so lots of parties. Johnny Ray was our go-to on that end, and he was awesome,” Patti Cohen said.

She said over the years, they tried all different types of programming.

“We tried all kinds of things to make young people come to the club and enjoy it, and now it seems like it’s doing it on its own,” she said. “I used to call it the hidden gem, and it’s not so hidden anymore. It’s really good to see that.”

Patti Cohen said she thinks the club’s momentum will continue gaining steam thanks to the people on its board.

“It’s definitely a legacy and, you know, maybe someday when I pass away, they’ll throw my ashes off the H.P. Cohen,” Patti Cohen said.

She added that she is happy the club is integrated in the Marblehead community.

“That’s the privilege of living in a community like this,” she said.
