LTE: Project 2025 and climate change

August 6, 2024 by To The Editor

To the editor:

Currently, the world, not just the U.S.A., is experiencing horrendous, destructive, catastrophic weather conditions. Many of us know what has happened or is happening in Louisiana, Texas, Florida, Arizona, California, Nevada, etc. Floods, extreme heat domes, tornadoes, mammoth forest fires, landslides, severe droughts – all becoming more severe and frequent. Africa, southern Europe, China, and South America are also struggling with similar weather. Even here in Marblehead, we are experiencing temperatures highly unusual this spring and summer.

For me, this raises two questions. First, are we humans causing or exacerbating these weather phenomena? Here are some facts, not fake
news. In 1984, the world population was 4.7 billion. Today, it is 8.16 billion and trending upward. Our destruction of forests on a large scale is well-documented. Someone called our forests the lungs of our earth. Our pollution of our waters and oceans is a fact. The mass extinction of other species can disturb the delicate balance of our existence. The more CO2 in the atmosphere, the more heat from the sun is trapped on earth. Fossil fuels feed this cycle. To absolutely deny these FACTS is unfathomably stupid and dangerous.

Second question. Project 2025 wants to emasculate/eliminate some of the governmental organizations which monitor and project data to help us recognize and prepare for climate events. “Break up NOAA,” Project 2025 says, referring to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and its six main offices, including the 154-year-old National Weather Service. “Together, these form a colossal operation that has become one of the main drivers of the climate-change alarm industry and, as such, is harmful to future U.S. prosperity,” Project 2025 says.

About two-thirds of the authors and editors involved in Project 2025’s plan served in the Trump administration. Trump also praised the Heritage Foundation (source of Project 2025) at an April 2022 event, calling it a “great group” that would “lay the groundwork and detail plans for exactly what our movement will do” when “the American people give us a colossal mandate to save America”. J.D. Vance wrote the foreword for Project 2025. Does anyone reading this letter really believe Trump will put the welfare of our planet ahead of personal vengeance and vendetta?

To the readers of this letter, the foregoing is only one of many Project 2025 proposals to radically change our government and our democracy. Please don’t be a MAGA. Defeat Trump and his sycophants. The man is pure evil.

Very truly yours,

Walter Haug
