Not to be confused with the second American president, the home at 4 State St. is named after Marblehead’s very own John Adams.
The Georgian-style home was built in 1795 by its namesake owner, an 18th-century fisherman and mariner. Georgian is a style of architecture that gets its name from the first four British monarchs who occupied the House of Hanover, and is typically used to describe similar residences built between 1714 and 1830, regardless of style.
According to the gambrel-roofed home’s historic markings, it was constructed by native cabinet-maker Benoice Johnson. The home remained in Adams’ family until the 1930s, long after his death in 1816. Johnson has been buried at the Harris Street Cemetery since his death in 1830.
