Despite a 28-28 tie, Marblehead’s girls cross country team pulled out a narrow win against Swampscott that came down to a sixth-runner tie-breaker.
Marri O’Connell, once again, led the way with a first-place finish and a time of 18:56, which smashed the existing course record (Gatchell’s Playground) of 19:20. A breakout freshman star, Annabelle Averett (20:05), led Swampscott.

Marblehead 1
St. Mary’s 0
In a battle between two strong programs, the Magicians left victorious from their home turf.
Both Marblehead and St. Mary’s sport strong defenses, so you could say it was going to take a bit of magic to score. Luckily for Marblehead, freshman Lucy McDonald had that magic, scoring the game-winning strike for her first varsity goal. The header came from Ainsley McDonald off a free kick.
Lily Heller and Hailey Gilmore combined to record their third shutout of the season.
Danvers 3
Marblehead 1
Callie Gilmore scored a goal for Marblehead with an assist coming from Lucy Church, but that’s all the Magicians got in this one. Hailey Gilmore (6 saves) and Heller (5) combined for 11 saves.
“Lily Heller made a fantastic save on a breakaway in the first half,” said coach Lisa Wales. “Ainsley MacDonald and Ava Machado continue to be solid on defense, but Danvers’ offense was a bit too much for us.”

Prep quarterback Christopher Vargas found Josh Haarmann to tie the game (7-7 after extra point) in the first quarter, and that was only the beginning of a scoring barrage.
