ROUNDUP: Hoopsters heat up in second half

January 22, 2025 by Joey Barrett

A narrow halftime deficit was no problem for Marblehead’s boys basketball team, which took control in the second half en route to a 68-57 home win against Danvers Friday night.

Marblehead put the pressure on with a fast start, but Danvers remained steady and took a 20-14 lead after one quarter. That said, the third quarter belonged to the Magicians, who recaptured the lead at 50-44.

It was all uphill from there and the Falcons ran out of time. Marblehead (4-4) climbed back to .500 behind strong performances from Sam Thompson (19 points), Finn Baron (16), and Matt Sherf (14). Connor DiTomaso’s 14 points led Danvers (5-7).

Michael Miller (21 points) was lights out from downtown with five 3-pointers, but it wasn’t enough for The Prep, which also received double-digit scoring performances from Dawagner De Los Santo (10) and Marcus Magloire (10).

Tuesday night’s matchup was tight throughout (Marblehead led, 17-13, at halftime) between the host Magicians and Winthrop. Tess Andriano (8 rebounds) continued to lead Marblehead offensively with 14 points. Liz Goldwater, Ramona Gillett, and Maddie Forbes all scored four points, while Lucy McDonald, Hailey Schmitt, and Samara Dosch “all played well in the win,” according to coach Paul Moran.

Behind Tess Andriano, who netted a game-high 14 points, Marblehead held off a comeback bid from Danvers last Friday. The Magicians led, 21-10, at halftime before the Falcons’ second-half run. Also contributing for Marblehead were Maddie Forbes (5 points), Sophie Bacon (3), Greta Sachs (2), Lucy McDonald (2), and Samara Dosch, who “played well all night,” according to coach Paul Moran.

The Prep – even with a 48-31 shot advantage – fell to 4-6. Xaverian took advantage of an odd-man rush to score the game-winning goal with six minutes to go. Brandon Ward scored for The Prep, assisted by Ryan Delucia and Sam Croke.
