Devereux Beach during 4th of July weekend. (Sophia Harris) Purchase this photo

Devereux continues to delight

July 7, 2025 by Sophia Harris

Last June, Parenting Unfiltered columnist Kara Baskin asked The Boston Globe readers to share their favorite family-friendly beaches across New England. The response? A popular Marblehead Beach!

Hundreds of passionate beachgoers weighed in, and they decided that one of the best beaches in New England is Devereux Beach.

The article stated that regulars appreciate clean facilities, picnic areas, and a friendly snack bar.

The article stated that the rocky sand is one of the beach’s pitfalls, but the slides at the on-site playground made up for it.

This past Fourth of July weekend, the beach was packed, and locals shared their thoughts on Devereux’s recognition.

“We love getting to come down here,” said Marblehead resident Meredith Wishart. “Definitely having the café is great, the beach park is awesome — yeah, we enjoy it.” While the Wisharts often frequent Preston Beach, she said she enjoys Devereux all the same.

Other beachgoers echoed similar feelings.

“My reaction? Surprised,” said Rei Newman, a Marblehead resident enjoying the Fourth of July festivities with friends. “We love Devereux. It’s close to all of our houses, very convenient.”

She said, “I kind of like how other towns have access, too. It’s very inclusive.”

Newman added she appreciates having plenty of spots to park in at the beach as well.

Her friend Ryleigh Lane agreed, adding, “It’s the only beach around with a restaurant on it.”

But even the most loyal fans admit the beach isn’t perfect. “I wish there were fewer rocks,” Newman said, laughing. “That’s my one complaint — the sand.”

Despite that, the group agreed the beach’s atmosphere and amenities keep them coming back.

“And I like cute events like the Sand Sculpture contest,” Newman said. “I know it’s just for the Fourth of July, but that’s really nice.”

With packed crowds, family traditions, and glowing reviews from locals, it’s clear why Devereux Beach is earning its place as one of Massachusetts’ best.
