Charlotte (Charlie) Roszell and Stefan Shepard, two members of Marblehead High School’s class of 2025, are the recipients of this year’s Sterny’s Way Scholarships. These scholarships are given annually in memory of David Stern, a former Marblehead youth sports coaching legend and strong supporter of the arts. Sterny passed away in 2010 and the scholarships were formally established starting in 2019.
Roszell, the Sterny’s Way Arts Scholarship recipient, is an accomplished photographer whose work has been displayed at Tufts University, at the Marblehead Festival of Arts, the Marblehead Arts Association, and in the National Grand Bank calendar. In addition, Roszell’s writing skills earned her the silver and gold keys from the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.
An outstanding student-athlete, Roszell graduated with a 3.3 GPA and served as a captain for the girls track and field team this spring. She was a member of the varsity team for three seasons. Roszell excelled in the 200, 400, 4X2 and 4X4 relay events.
Roszell was a member of the National Green School Society, the MHS Democrats Club and Team Harmony. She was also a sports photographer for the school’s sports teams.
Roszell demonstrated dedication to her community during her high school career through her work with young children and her volunteer efforts. She worked as a Therapeutic Horse Handler at Windrush Farm in North Andover, assisting students with special needs with horseback riding classes. As well, she served as a track meet official at Veterans Middle School.
Roszell has committed to the University of Vermont where she will compete as a member of the track and field team. She plans to major in Sports Psychology, combining her love of athletics with her desire to help athletes support their mental well-being.
Shepard is the Sterny’s Way Sports Scholarship recipient. An outstanding three-sport athlete for the Magicians. Shepard was a three-year member of both the varsity soccer and baseball teams. He served as tri-captain in soccer last fall and played striker. He also played guard on the boys basketball team. This spring, the second baseman/shortstop was one of the captains of the baseball team and was named an All-Northeastern Conference All-Star.
Shepard has a unique and special tie to David Stern. His father, Paul, enjoyed a 30-year friendship with Stern, spanning from their time participating in youth sports, attending and graduating Marblehead High together and then as teammates in the town’s softball leagues.
A strong advocate for helping others enjoy sports and develop their skills, Shepard volunteered as a soccer instructor and referee for the North Shore Rovers, a local organization that focuses on students with special needs.
Shepard will attend Elon University this fall. He will major in Finance with a minor in Sports Management.
Sterny’s Way, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. The Sterny’s Way Board greatly appreciates the community’s continued support to help fund the annual scholarships of $2,500 to a MHS graduate who has shown dedication to the Arts (music, dance, fine arts, etc.) and a MHS graduate who participated in Marblehead Youth Softball or Marblehead Youth Baseball.
The Sterny’s Way Board increased the annual scholarships from $1,500 to $2,500 this year. This increase was made possible by the generosity of the Marblehead community. A special thank you goes out to the crew behind the annual Winter Bags Tournament hosted by the Norman family and friends. The late Todd Norman was a founding member of the Sterny’s Way Board and the Norman family’s support of the Sterny’s Way Scholarships is a reflection of Todd’s generosity and dedication to Marblehead’s youth.
