Counseling Center hopes locals come out swinging for a cause

October 22, 2025 by For The Weekly News

Lace up your golf shoes, grab your clubs, and gather your favorite foursome for Marblehead Counseling Center’s Community Classic Golf Tournament, to be held Monday, Oct. 27 at Tedesco Country Club in Marblehead. The event features a Bramble-style format, course-wide challenges and prizes, lunch, swag bags, a cocktail reception, and an awards ceremony at the exclusive, private, New England-style golf course. This year, there will be a number of special events and contests on many of the holes, which is hosted in partnership with Leaderboard New England, Pinned and Tedesco. Golfers will have the opportunity for fun, fast play with plenty of competition to keep things interesting. A $10,000 putt contest is also on the ticket.

The event has been part of the Marblehead Counseling Center’s fundraising for more than 25 years, thanks to the Marblehead Select Board’s support. According to Erin Hegarty, MCC board member and MCC Community Classic Golf event organizer, along with Board member Trish Murnane, anticipation is building for the biennial tournament. But Hegarty is also gratified that community members want to help support the critical work being done at MCC, Marblehead’s mental health and wellness resource serving the North Shore.

“We have some fantastic sponsors in Pinned and Leaderboard New England, and many of our area businesses are also stepping up to sponsor holes and challenges. Really, this is an easy ask for people in town,” she said. “Of course people want to have a great time out on the golf course, but this community embraces the ‘give-back’ ethos. Playing a round of golf on a beautiful course, while simultaneously helping those who are struggling is just second nature in Marblehead.”

The tournament costs $1,000 per foursome. Players create their own teams and there are still opportunities for all levels of tournament sponsorship.

“This is a great opportunity to promote your business, hang out with golf buddies and enjoy a special day of golf,” said Ruth Ferguson, President of the Board of Directors of MCC. “At the same time, players are supporting our day-to-day work at Marblehead Counseling Center.”

That support is necessary, she added, as the funding received by MCC covers only about 25 percent of the Center’s costs of care for people in need.

“One in five Americans will have a diagnosable mental health condition in any given year,” Ferguson said. “Nearly everyone knows a friend, loved one, or coworker who has struggled. The work is important and it’s not going away. This is a great way to help, and by the way, take care of your own mental health with a great day out having fun.”

Every sponsorship dollar makes an impact.

For more than 55 years, MCC has provided mental health and social services for children, teens, adults, seniors and families.  The Community Classic Golf Tournament is an important fundraiser that allows MCC to continue to serve the communities of Marblehead, Swampscott, Lynn, Nahant and others on the North Shore.
