Three High School seniors and members of the Marblehead High School Democrats were honored with the MDTC (Marblehead Democrat Town Committee) Edwin L. Goldberg and Selma L. Goldberg scholarship at the Jacobi Community Center during the committee’s Monday meeting.
The $3,000 scholarship was awarded to Yasen Colon, Summer Genovese, and Arielle Mogolesko during the 42nd annual presentation of the award. State Rep. Jenny Armini (D-Marblehead) was in attendance and handed out the scholarships to each student. She also addressed the three scholarship recipients and congratulated them in a speech.
“I would like to congratulate Arielle, Summer, and Yasen, and thank them for inspiring us with their youthful audacity.”
Armani continued by advising the students to continue on their path to success.
“To you, our students, go do great things,” said Armini. “Pursue your goals relentlessly, seek justice always, and remember, you have a stake in one another.”
Each of the students also spoke after receiving the award, beginning with Colon.
“It’s a great honor to be receiving this scholarship here tonight,” Colon said. “I would like to start by saying a big thank you to the Goldberg family for their generosity and for their activism. I wanted to thank all of you, the MDTC members, for your generosity and support as well.”
Colon announced that he will be studying aerospace engineering at Purdue University this fall.
In her speech, Genovese announced that she will be attending Boston University to pursue a degree in the sustainable-business field.
“It is a privilege and an honor to accept this as an investment in my future,” she said. “I do not take it lightly.”
Mogolesko congratulated Colon and Genovese and said that with this scholarship, she will continue to make an impact in her communities as she goes through school.
“I share many of the same values that you do tonight, mainly regarding social justice, as I strive to make change and be a positive influence and active participant in all of the communities I am a part of,” she said.
Mogolesko will be attending the University of Maryland, studying business on a pre-law trajectory.
