The Marblehead track and field team competed in the Division 3 state championship this past weekend. The girls finished seventh, while the boys placed 17th.
Ava Machado, Cate Trautman, Sadie Halpern, and Le’Daisha Williams are state champions in the 4x100m relay, sporting a time of 49.85 and shattering their previous best by nearly a second.
“At the beginning of the season, we thought the 4x100m would be good, but not extraordinary. Now, after an incredible year for all four girls, they are state champions,” Marblehead coach Nolan Raimo said. “This sets a new school record that will be very difficult to top.”
David DiCostanzo, Harrison Curtis, Sebastian Pantzer, and Ryan Thompson put together the second-fastest 4x400m relay time in school history, finishing fifth with a time of
3:30.05.
“We ran this relay at the beginning of the season to earn a spot in the seeded heat of this meet, and after a month of focusing on individual events, they banded back together to put down a ridiculous time that could easily win a state championship in a different year,” Raimo said.
In the 100m, Machado set a new personal record of 12.74 in the prelims, which auto-qualified her for the championship this weekend. She finished seventh with a time of 12.91.
Harrison Curtis motored his way to fifth place in the boys 100m with a time of 11.22 in the prelims and 11.25 in the finals.
And in the long jump, Errol Apostolopoulos made some noise. He was the last person to enter the contest (24th out of 24 jumpers), but finished seventh with a new personal record of 20-8.5.
Keira Sweetnam caught eyes in the high jump, scoring second with a 5-4.
“Keira has rightfully planted her name as one of the top jumpers in New England with a 5-4 clearance,” Raimo said.
In the boys 400m, Thompson earned another medal with a time of 51.99 to finish eighth.
“Ryan has spanned just about every race in track, and he’s found success in all of them,” Raimo said. “Very well done.”
Cat Piper took care of business in the 2-mile, sporting a 11:08.56 for a 15-second improvement and qualifying her for New Balance nationals.
Trautman also impressed in the 200m (26.62) to finish ninth. Rachael Albert finished fifth in discus with a throw of 101-6, while Claire Davis picked up a medal in the triple jump with a leap of 34-3 to finish sixth.
“It was a great two days of track,” Raimo said.
