Marblehead High School Television (MHTV) compiled the top-10 plays of the fall, winter, and spring sports seasons. We love the fundamentals, but these are the highlights. From high-flying Magicians to tic-tac-toe goals, the plays are as follows:
10 – In a home basketball game with fans flooding the high school, the Magicians hauled down a rebound before heading down the court in transition. From there, Isaiah Makor caught the ball at the three-point line and took two steps before throwing down a one-handed, lefty dunk – much to the delight of the student section to his right.
9 – Well, it’s time for some skill. In boys soccer action, Isaiah Piña rushed up the field from the defense spot and corralled the ball. From distance, he collected the ball with his chest before firing the ball up and over the keeper from the 20-yard line. He was then met with hugs and handshakes around midfield.
8 – Sometimes, offense starts with defense – just ask Connor Cronin of the boys lacrosse team. He intercepted a Milton pass, bolted all the way downfield, then dished the ball to Gio Garibotto who cashed in on a lefty snipe. In total, Cronin registered 131 points for the Magicians this spring.
7 – With a two-goal lead against Danvers in boys ice hockey action, Avin Rodovsky tracked down the puck in the neutral zone before dropping off a no-look pass to Charlie Grenier who scored low from the right circle. The goat put away the Falcons in the third and final period.
6 – As for number six, you’d have to see it to believe it. On a free kick from the 30-yard line, Talia Selby lofted a beautiful pass to Nev Koughan who headed in a highlight-reel goal. The strike put the Magicians ahead of Essex Tech 3-2.
5 – Into the top five we go. In Friday night football action, Texas A&M-commit Miles O’Neill dropped back in the pocket before firing to Shane Keough running a go route. The speedster took care of the rest, bolting untouched to the endzone for a 61-yard touchdown.
4 – Maddie Forbes is a star in girls lacrosse – just take a look at this one. With the first half trickling down in a home game against Manchester-Essex, she ran through two defenders before firing one upstairs to beat the buzzer. The goal cut Marblehead’s deficit to two, and, more importantly, she got some hugs from her teammates afterward.
3 – In one of the best seasons in Marblehead sports history, the boys lacrosse team faced a tough test in Beverly – all to keep its undefeated streak alive. In one-on-one coverage, Cronin took advantage, going to his right before placing one in the top-left corner for the game-winning goal.
2 – Trailing Beverly 8-7 in a softball showdown, Ruby Calienes made an incredible catch before orchestrating a triple play in the top of the seventh inning. She was met with a swarm of teammates, and what a beauty it was.
1 – Marblehead’s top sports play of the year came on the football field. Chris DeWitt ran an out-route with the Magicians in danger of a safety against Whitman-Hanson. DeWitt shrugged off a defender, then his speed took care of the rest. Two defenders dove for his legs, but to no avail. DeWitt scored a 99-yard touchdown on a pass from O’Neill, and the Magicians put away the opposition midway through the third quarter, ahead 28-0.
With the fall sports season just around the corner, we can’t wait to see what’s next.
