A Marblehead firefighter walks past the annual Christmas tree bonfire at Riverhead Beach.

Annual Christmas tree bonfire set for Jan. 6

December 28, 2022 by Charlie McKenna

The town’s annual Christmas Tree Bonfire is set for Jan. 6, and trees are being picked up for the blaze until that date.

Christmas trees will be collected curbside and need to have lights, ornaments, and stands removed. Trees that do not meet those requirements, as well as trees in plastic bags, will not be picked up, according to a letter sent to the Select Board by Fire Chief Jason Gilliland and Department of Public Works Director Amy McHugh.

Trees will continue to be picked up until Jan. 13, but will not be included in the bonfire. After Jan. 13, residents will need to bring their trees to the Transfer Station to dispose of them.

The bonfire is set to take place at 6 p.m. next Friday at Riverhead Beach. Anyone in the area of the beach should prepare for extra traffic and for smoke and fire to be visible.
