Marblehead Little Theatre is pleased to announce non-equity auditions for “The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui” will be held on Monday, July 8 and Tuesday, July 9 from 6 to 9 p.m. at 12 School St. Roles can be viewed on the Marblehead Little Theatre website at https://www.mltlive.com/the-resistible-rise-of-arturo-ui-auditions/.
Written by Bertolt Brecht, translated by George Tabori, and revised by Alistair Beaton, “The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui” is considered to be Brecht’s epic “gangster play.” A dark commentary on the perils of unchecked power, “The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui” will be directed by Greg Mancusi-Ungaro.
The play’s broad themes include corruption, coercion, and violence in order to gain power. It is a transparent allegory of Adolf Hitler’s rise in late 1930s Germany, re-imagined in the gangster-dominated Chicago of the 1920s.
Auditions will be scheduled in 30-minute blocks, with up to four auditioners in each block. Please schedule an audition time block online at https://www.mltlive.com/the-resistible-rise-of-arturo-ui-auditions/. Walk-ins will be seen as time allows.
Auditioners are asked to prepare two monologues (60-90 seconds each) to show their range. One of the monologues should showcase an ability with language and declamation (Shakespeare, Mamet, Sorkin, etc.). Auditioners are asked to present materials they prepared and may then be asked to read scenes or parts individually, or with other members of their group.
Twelve performances of the play are scheduled to run from Sept. 27 through Pct.13, 2024. For questions, please contact Greg Mancusi-Ungaro at greg.mancusi@gmail.com.
