On June 20, 1970, The Daily Evening Item reported on a rat problem on Orchard Circle.
Residents were very concerned and brought this matter to the Board of Health the following Monday.
They complained to selectmen that a gaggle of rats were invading their homes and said they were concerned about the safety of their children and pets.
“Our inspection indicates there may be a problem. However, we do not believe the situation is one that can’t be solved,” then-Board of Health Director Raymond Reed
According to the American Pest Association, the most common rat species in Massachusetts is the Norway rat, which can be found throughout the state. There is another species people could have trouble with if they live in a coastal area called the black rat.
Luckily, the Norway rat only has a life span of approximately two years, while the black rat only lives for about a year.
While the rats plaguing Orchard Circle were likely taken care of, their descendants are probably still lurking around.
