A dive into the pages of the March 23, 2013 edition of The Daily Item revealed it was 10 years ago this week when Marblehead Superintendent Gregory Maass suddenly resigned from his post.

The Item‘s story provided few details on what exactly prompted Maass’ resignation, though the story does note that his decision to do so surprised town officials.

“It’s obviously disrupting. I have no comment until I have more information,” Town Administrator Jeff Chelgren told The Item at the time.

Chelgrem added that he heard of Maass’ resignation from the police chief.

Maass announced his resignation during a School Committee meeting, bringing an end to what was a short tenure that began in February 2011 after he departed Green Bay, Wisconsin, where he held the same post. The Boston Globe reported that Maass cited tension between the administration and the School Committee as a motivating factor in his resignation.

According to The Globe, Maass’ departure left Marblehead looking to hire its sixth superintendent since 2005.
