Boys cross country wins Ocean State Invitational

September 27, 2023 by Joey Barrett

The Marblehead boys cross country team upped its record to 4-0 after winning the Varsity 2 race in the Ocean State Invitational at Goddard State Park in Rhode Island Saturday.

They did so with 121 points, while Point Pleasant Boro (New Jersey) snagged second with 156, followed by Danvers (158).

Marblehead was led by the first-place finish of Isaac Gross (16:01), who won by an impressive 19 seconds. Nate Assa (6th, 16:29), Will Cerrutti (34th, 17:20), Henrik Adams (42nd, 17:35), and Ryan Blestowe (45th, 17:37) rounded out the Magicians’ top five.

Will Cruikshank (84th, 18:17) and Will Cronin (149th, 19:29) also ran well in the varsity race, which Marblehead has now won for the second consecutive year.

In the girls championship race, Marrietta O’Connell had the fastest time of the day for a Massachusetts runner (18:28.6).

“Her six-second personal record understates how impressive the performance was, since her prior best came on a much faster course at the end of last season when she was in peak form,” said coach Will Herlihy.

As for the girls varsity race, Abbie Goodwin (23:55.7; personal record), Shannon Hitscherich (24:31.9; personal record), and Angie Fischer (26:39.4) all impressed.

The Magicians (4-3) will have to wait a little longer for their fifth win. Marblehead fell to North Andover Friday in set scores of 16-25, 16-25, and 24-26.

Lila Moniz registered six kills, Deysha Amadis added another five, Megan Parkman led the team with 10 digs, and Eva Burke dished out 20 assists.

Marblehead has a week off as it travels to face Notre Dame (Hingham) on Friday.

Despite Marblehead’s London McDonald finding the back of the net, the Magicians fell short against a tough Andover program on the road Saturday, 2-1.
