Eastern Yacht Club offering Navigation and Safety Classes

March 30, 2023 by Ryan Vermette

Eastern Yacht Club will be holding two important classes for boaters in Marblehead between April and June.

On Saturday, April 8, world class navigator and America’s Cup winner Peter Isler will take boaters through a tour of the technology, tools, and best practices in the nav station (and on deck) of a modern coastal/offshore boat. The class will teach both cruisers and racers how modern-day tools and information can help them sail safer, smoother, and faster. Though expedition navigation and sailing software will be heavily-discussed, no prior knowledge of these topics is required.

Other topics that will be discussed during the course include: Marine weather in 2023: reading clouds, understanding the big picture, outside weather information (radar, satellite, and weather apps); Weather models: strengths and limitations, sources, best practices; Departure planning and preparation: historical weather study, pre-departure planning, picking your best window; and navigator skills and communication: staying sharp, sharing the wealth.

Tickets for the class are $175 and class size is limited to 60. Check in will begin at 8:45 a.m. and the session will start promptly at 9 a.m. and end at 4:30 p.m.

On Saturday, June 10, a U.S. Sailing approved seminar co-hosted by the Storm Trysail Club and the Marblehead-to-Halifax Ocean Race will take place. The hands-on course will cover topics including life-rafts, flares, fire-fighting, repacking your inflatable PFD, safety, and rescue tips.

The course will run rain or shine and participants are advised to dress appropriately. Though not required, the seminar will fare better for those who have already completed the online course. The online course is required to receive an official U.S. Sailing Coastal or International Offshore certification. To receive a certificate for the 2023 Marblehead-to-Halifax race, the course must be completed before June 10.

There are two pricing options for the seminar. $140 for only the hands-on seminar, or $175 for the hands-on course and the U.S. Sailing Safety at Sea Certificate. Registration is limited to 90 people.

To register for either or both seminars, visit www.EasternYC.org or call 781-631-1400 any week between Wednesday and Saturday.
