Danvers High School was the site of Friday night’s football game between Marblehead and the Falcons, but, truth be told, the home fans didn’t have much to cheer about. The Magicians got the job done, 34-7, to pick up a pivotal road win ahead of the state tournament.
Coach Jim Rudloff and company return home to Piper Field this Friday in the MIAA Division 4 state tournament. The round-of-16 matchup begins at 7 p.m. against No. 11 Norwood. The Magicians are ranked No. 6 after a six-game winning streak that wrapped up the regular season.
Back to Danvers. Crew Monaco’s 27-yard rushing touchdown got the offense party started. From there, Yandel Garcia cashed in on a 3-yard rushing score set up by Rylan Golden’s 21-yard catch.
Quarterback Finn Gallup spotted Sam Thompson for a touchdown through the air to put the pressure on. The next thing you knew, it was 20-7 in favor of the visitors.
Wales found Golden again in the fourth quarter — this time for six. From there, Cam Quigley’s (2 INT) 40-yard interception return ended any hope of a Danvers comeback.
Should Marblehead take care of business Friday night, it would take on the winner of No. 3 Grafton and No. 14 Bedford in the Round of 8.
