Search for Brian Ota’s successor to begin after seat vacancy

August 14, 2025 by Sophia Harris

The School Committee voted to formally alert the Select Board that member Brian Ota vacated his seat at its meeting on Aug. 7.

Ota stepped down from his role as School Committee member during the Committee meeting on July 31.

He is leaving town after two years in that position, and several more in Marblehead Public Schools. Ota emphasized that he is merely vacating his position, not resigning, as he is moving out of Marblehead.

Once applications are opened, the Select Board and School Committee will hold a joint meeting to interview applicants to be Ota’s successor.

Before entering into executive session, the School Committee also voted to create a subcommittee to work on the high school roof project.

Superintendent John Robidoux shared his opinion and said that “it makes sense” to create a subcommittee focused solely on the high school roof project, rather than lumping it into the facilities subcommittee’s workload.

Member Kate Schmeckpeper made a motion to task member Henry Gwazda with coming to the next school committee meeting on Aug. 21 with a list of recommendations of “community members with subject matter expertise.” Gwazda was also voted to sit on the new roof subcommittee.

The committee then went into executive session to discuss threatened litigation by a former administrator, Williams said.
