This week’s edition bent the rules a little bit, as this location is more of a site than a building. However, it has a more than enough rich history behind it to justify its spot.
Old Burial Hill is one of the oldest graveyards in New England. It does have a connection to an actual historic building, as it was conceived at the site of Marblehead’s first meeting house in 1638. The house served as the community church as well as the site for government business. The first meeting house remained adjacent to the graveyard until 1696, when a new one was built on Franklin Street to replace it.
Old Burial Hill has more than 650 marked graves, with the oldest known being from 1681. Gen. John Glover is one of approximately 600 18th-century Revolutionary War veterans who were laid to rest there.
