On Friday, May 3rd, the League of Women Voters will be supporting an event at the Essex North Shore Agricultural and Technical School which will honor JoAnne Mayor, who passed in 2022 and whose motto was: ‘Do-What’s-Right, and Stand-Up-To-Be-Counted’.
The event will be centered around students’ capstone projects for Genocide Studies, where they can share their research on past and ongoing genocides and their relevance to underrepresented human rights issues happening today.
The purpose is to educate and inform those about genocide through the student’s various art mediums and advocate for the prevention of future ones.
Some topics that’ll be covered include the Armenian Genocide, the ethnic cleansing of Artsakh, the Holocaust, the Rwandan genocide, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and the Israel-Palestine conflict.
The League of Women Voters said in a statement that “The Genocide Studies Exhibition represents a culmination of these values, providing a platform for students to engage deeply with the darkest chapters of human history while also exploring their implications for the present and future, as well as the effectiveness of international law in response to these events.”
The statement also requested those attending to engage with the art and the researchers there.
Be sure to note the times as well. The event will last from 10 to 1 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. in the alumni gym.
