To the editor:
I refer to the commentary “Unhappy with the Supreme Court ?…” by Jackie Calmes. Congratulations to Ms. Calmes for raising such a critical yet least discussed topic, the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court is supposed to be apolitical and unbiased. Looking at its current history and how it was composed, I would have to be smoking something to really believe that. It is a fallible institution just waiting to be manipulated. As Calmes points out, the machinations of former president of the Senate Mitch McConnell and his Republican colleagues are the most blatant example of how to stack the deck.
The Supreme Court is currently damaged goods. I do not have the exact figure but their approval rating among the public is pretty low. Unless, of course, you subscribe to Christian nationalism or their like or the cult as expressed by the current Speaker of the House Mike Johnson. If you don’t like some of the court’s decisions up until now, you ain’t seen nothing yet.
So why Trump? He has shown us three times already by his appointments what little regard he has for a balanced court. Do you think he will not stop stacking and manipulating our judicial system to satisfy his MAGA and Christian Right cult followers? Much damage has already been done but we must do whatever we can to contain any future damage. A presidency is good for four, maybe eight years. A Supreme Court is almost forever. Please, do not vote for Trump.
