LTE: Project 2025 poses a serious threat to our climate

September 2, 2024 by To The Editor

To the editor:

I refer to the letter to the editor from Richard Smith dealing with Project 2025 from the Heritage Foundation. I apologize for attributing the foreword to JD Vance. Mr. Smith, you are correct. One cannot be too careful in researching facts. However, I do stand by the nefarious content of this project and its destruction of our democracy. The salient recommendations of Project 2025 are available in a reliable form on line.

To Mr. Smith’s comment re: CO2 and the point of saturation trapping the sun’s heat on earth, I ask, do we know this point? How close are we to this point? Repeating my concerns regarding climate change, I repeat the following. First, I ask are we humans causing or exacerbating these weather phenomena? Please note, I am asking. Here are some facts, not fake news. In 1984, the world population was 4.7 billion. Today, it is 8.16 billion and trending upward. Our destruction of forests on a large scale is well-documented. Someone called our forests the lungs of our earth. Our pollution of our waters and oceans is a fact. The mass extinction of other species can disturb the delicate balance of our existence. The more CO2 in the atmosphere, the more heat from the sun is trapped on earth. Fossil fuels feed this cycle. What is the point of saturation, Mr. Smith? I guess this is of no concern to Mr. Smith.

Mr. Smith denigrated my concern about Project 2025 and NOAA. Project 2025 wants to emasculate/eliminate some of the governmental
organizations which monitor and project data to help us recognize and prepare for climate events. “Break up NOAA,” Project 2025 says, referring to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and its six main offices, including the 154-year-old National Weather Service. Mr. Smith says we should place these agencies under the control of states. Did I understand this suggestion of Mr. Smith right?

Then, Mr. Smith said something about the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, insinuating that we who are supporting Ukraine and Israel to defend themselves against brutal forces are furthering the possibility of a nuclear war. Mr. Smith, have you heard of Mr. Putin and Hamas?

All of the foregoing really challenges my mind as to the thinking of MAGAs. And there are millions like Mr. Smith. Mr. Smith, with all due respect, you scare the hell out of me. That scare notwithstanding, I offer my thanks to Debra Duxbury and Dick Leahy for their letters and their efforts to save our democracy.

Very truly yours,

Walter Haug
