LTE: Security lighting should not intrude on the property of others

September 5, 2024 by To The Editor

To the editor:

Security lighting that faces away from the property it is “protecting” is a gross intrusion of the adjacent homes’ privacy and a source of invasive illumination on and in those homes.

Security lighting should only face in and only fall on the property it is “protecting” and not floodlight the neighborhood. I wonder if these security lights would really deter a determined criminal or rather just suggest there must be something of value in there?

This excess consumption of electricity is another unnecessary poke at our environment. Porch and front-door lights are attractive and will tell the bad guys you are at home, and that should be all the exterior lights a home needs.
