Abbot Hall will be host to the “Songs of the Seafarer” concert on Sunday, Aug. 20 at 4 p.m. The performance is headed by the Arpeggione chamber ensemble, along with guest baritone vocalist David Kravitz.
Arpeggione is the sole historically-informed chamber group on the North Shore. It was founded in 2022 by clarinetist Thomas Carroll and flautist Andrea LeBlanc. The ensemble consists of 19 total musicians, 10 of whom, including the founding duo, will perform later this month in Marblehead. This sea-faring summer concert coincides with the beginning of Arpeggione’s second season.
The concert is heavily inspired by Gustav Mahler’s “Songs of the Wayfarer.” In addition, the ensemble has crafted original pieces based on orchestral and vocal works of Mahler, Felix Mendelssohn, Franz Schubert, and Amy Beach.
The performance is made up of multiple instruments from the 19th century, including the Romantic-era flute, harmonium, clarinet, and a handmade broom. Its goal is to honor and recapture Marblehead’s unique maritime history with themes of fishing, the sea, and voyages.
Tickets are priced at $35 and can be purchased on-site as well as online at www.appregione-ensemble.com
