Three Marbleheaders competed Tuesday in the 39th annual Daily Item Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Out of 34 contestants, Isabella DelRe, a fifth grader from Tower School, earned 19th place in the bee. She spelled “hostile,” “bungee” and “schooner” correctly in the first three rounds but was eliminated in the fourth.
Dounia Peters-Abbadi, Marblehead Veterans Middle School eighth grader, made it through the first three rounds – correctly spelling “naysayers,” “individual” and “acupuncture” – only to join DelRe and be eliminated in the fourth round.
In 9th place was Marblehead seventh grader Arvin Hagayegi of Marblehead Community Charter School. He correctly spelled “abolish,” “cinderella,” “stegosaur” and “Vatican” before being eliminated in the fifth round.
